This was the best episode of the season yet. It was a heartwarming episode with serious tone. There were Boy Meets World references and foreshadowing. I did not expect an argument to occur on Disney between Shawn and Katy, so I was very surprised (in a good way that is).

It was Maya’s 14th birthday and Katy was working at the diner. Maya thought her mom forgot her birthday. Shawn was at the Matthews apartment (he was there doing a photo essay “Weekends in New York for under $100” and wanted to stay at the Matthews.) Shawn wasn’t aware that it was Maya’s birthday until Riley had mentioned that it was. Cory and Topanga arrived shortly after with Maya’s birthday cake. Cory didn’t realize that Shawn and Maya had arrived and put his foot in his mouth as he rambled on to Topanga about how Maya’s mom probably forgot her birthday and how at least she wasn’t like Shawn’s mom who would leave them all the time.

Riley asked who the key to Shawn’s heart was and Maya agreed that she wanted to know who it was as well. He answered with Angela and then Cory chimed in and asked them “Do you want to know how they fell in love?” and right away Topanga answered with “He went through her purse” which surprised the girls. Shawn went on to explain how they dated in high school, and how he kept trying to make their relationship work but Angela left him.

After they got done talking about Angela, Riley said that she wanted to Cory and Topanga in her room. Once there, she went onto tell them how she wanted Shawn to be Maya’s dad which wowed both Cory and Topanga. Topanga spoke up and said that if anyone could do it was her dad.  As they were all talking Maya and Shawn were having conversation in the living room about the similarities with their parents.  Maya was curious about Shawn’s mom and he told her a little bit about that. She also told him that her mom forgot her birthday. There was also a funny appearance by both Farkle and Lucas when they showed up while Cory, Topanga and Riley were talking. Farkle had recorded Maya and Riley’s voices on his watch.

Maya told Riley, Farkle and Lucas she wanted to see them in Riley’s room. When they went back there Lucas tied Maya up and Riley told her about how Shawn was going to see Maya’s mom.  Maya freaked out a bit and was clearly annoyed that Riley had done that. She was afraid that it would push Shawn away because that’s what her mom does is push people away. Once Shawn left Cory and Topanga got to talking and Cory fell asleep during the conversation and did the whole yipping thing which was really funny.

In the mean time Shawn decided that he was going to go the diner to confront Katy on what kind of parent she was. They were talking and that is when Katy revealed that she didn’t chase away Maya’s dad because the truth was that he actually was the one who left. She said that she wanted to protect Maya from the truth. Katy told Shawn that she didn’t forget Maya’s birthday and explained that she was working an extra shift at the diner so that she could make extra money for a locket to give to Maya for her birthday. When the girl arrived with the locket Shawn gave her $50 since she was short on cash. After that the two of them went to the Matthews apartment and Shawn told Maya the truth. Shawn took the locket out of the purse (brilliant joke there as Riley and Maya said “Let him!” when Katy said “You can’t go through my purse) and gave it to Maya. After that Shawn took a picture of Katy and Maya together and then they celebrated Maya’s birthday with the cake. It was such a great moment seeing Maya’s face when she was making a wish as she was looking at Shawn and Katy. She obviously wants Shawn to be her step father.

In my opinion, I think it’s best for Shawn and Angela to move on from each other. They were always back and fourth with their relationship and they kept having pain in their relationship. I think the way it looks now is much better as it seems that Shawn can maybe get a better happy ending and he can look out for Maya as well.

I’m not sure if anyone agrees with us, but maybe a flashback of Angela would of been great but obviously this episode was fantastic. I found it a bit strange that Jack wasn’t mentioned as he was Shawn’s half brother.

This episode reminded me of “Girl Meets Truth” when Maya found a locket with a picture of the family inside of it. It is very similar in the sense that now Maya has her own locket with a picture of her with her mom inside of it.

Boy Meets World references: (I might of missed some)

I might be wrong but Riley told Maya in the beginning of the episode “You’ll probably die before me since you’re older” sounds like what Eric said in the episode “And Then There Was Shawn”to Jack.

Riley saying about Shawn on the couch “We found him on the couch. Can we keep him”? Sounds like the episode “A Long Walk to Pittsburgh” of Eric talking about him finding Cory in Topanga’s house then bringing him back to their house.

Cory said “Why is everybody always behind me” when he’s holding Maya’s birthday cake and didn’t know Maya was behind her.
