Girl Meets World / June 13th, 2014

Boy Meets World2

via press release:

Burbank, CA (June 13, 2014) – ABC Family is celebrating all things Cory and Topanga with “Boy Meets World” mini marathons, airing Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM ET/PT all summer long, in anticipation of the premiere of Disney Channel’s family comedy “Girl Meets World,” Friday, June 27 at 9:45 PM ET/PT.

“Boy Meets World” ran on ABC from 1993-2000 and followed the lives of young Cory Matthews (Ben Savage), his friend Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) and his girlfriend, Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel), as they juggled family, friends and school. The hit sitcom tackled such serious topics as broken families, peer pressure and bullying, while maintaining its clever sense of humor.

“Girl Meets World” picks up the story 14 years later, with Cory and Topanga now living in New York, married and raising quirky five-year-old son, Auggie (August Maturo), and tween daughter, Riley (Rowan Blanchard). Riley and her best friend, Maya (Sabrina Carpenter), traverse the twists and turns of teenage years at Manhattan’s John Quincy Adams Middle School, where Cory is their History teacher.

Girl Meets World / June 12th, 2014

Rachel Jacobs (Daughter of BMW and GMW creator Michael Jacobs) interviewed her father Michael and the cast.

Ben, Danielle, Rider, Rowan, Sabrina, Auggie
Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Rider Strong, Ben Savage, August Maturo, Danielle Fishel in Girl Meets World

Word & Film: What was the impetus to revisit “Boy Meets World?” Why now?

Michael Jacobs: Disney called and asked for a new “Boy Meets World,” which I would never do. They appreciated that, and asked if there was anything I’d do involving the show. So I thought about it, because they were very passionate about wanting to do it. I took a look around at what was on television, and I saw that there wasn’t anything on that resembled that sort of storytelling. Fourteen years had passed since the end of “Boy.” Cory and Topanga were married. They had moved to New York. There’s a show there from the point of view of their children. Cory and Topanga would be young parents. Ben would be as confused a parent as he was a kid, balanced by Topanga’s great strength. And then I thought about the kids. I thought it would be more interesting, perhaps, if they had a daughter. Like you.

W&F: Yeah, Ben told me he only wanted to do the show if the relationship was like you and me.

MJ: Yes, I’ve kept that in mind.

W&F: Well, certainly that’ll make it a better show.

MJ: Yeah, thanks. The last element that made it click for me was that it’s a rougher world, and everything that’s happened in the last two decades would come into play. We get to see the original characters deal with the current world.

W&F: How do the original characters, in their later iterations, compare to who you thought they’d be when the show started twenty years ago?

Ben Savage: Cory is still the same sweet, neurotic, guy he’s always been. He still wants things organized. He’s still resistant to any and all change. And he still likes cake. The difference now is that Cory is a father to two children, whom he absolutely adores.

One of the best quotes was where Michael Jacobs said this:

You cannot, as an audience, compare the pilot, or the first couple of episodes, to an entire television series. It’s an unfair comparison that won’t benefit anybody. The show gets better, and will continue to get better, as the new characters grow and evolve. And just like you fell in love with Cory, Topanga, and Shawn, I think you’ll fall in love with the new characters, too.

My Fan Review of Girl Meets World

If you prefer to read the Non-Spoiler review of Girl Meets World, you can read it here: http://bmwsequel.com/2014/05/21/non-spoiler-review-of-girl-meets-world/

I personally think that this show is going to be incredible. I LOVED the pilot and have watched it 3 times already.  There are definitely life lessons in this show just like Boy Meets World had. One of my favorite things about this show is that they have Cory as a teacher, teaching life lessons to his little girl just like Mr. Feeny did with him in the original. It is a perfect fit to have Cory in that role now. Rowan Blanchard is an amazing actress. I find it incredible that she’s able to portray Riley just like Ben did with Cory in the very beginning. You can tell that Riley is definitely Cory’s daughter but there is also quirkiness in there just like Topanga has.  I instantly fell in love with Riley and Maya’s friendship. It reminds me so much of Shawn and Cory’s friendship.

Sabrina Carpenter is incredible as well. My heart completely breaks for Maya and I found myself getting choked up during the scene where Maya told Cory she has no one to help her with her home work. Maya also has an incredibly funny side to her just like Shawn did. She’s outspoken and very rebellious. I cannot wait to see where Maya and Riley’s friendship goes. I love that  Riley is going to help Maya not be so rebellious and be there for her just as Cory always did for Shawn.

Auggie is just too cute for words. Even though we didn’t get to see much of him I can tell he’s going to steal the hearts of everyone around the world. August is a great little actor.  You can tell just by that little scene that he looks up to big sister Riley and that he adores her. Another thing I loved is you can tell he’s totally going to be a Mama’s boy! I can’t wait for more scenes of him with Cory and Topanga. Lucas was awesome as well. Peyton did an amazing job with his scenes and is a great actor. I loved the scene with him and Sabrina on the subway. I thought it was cute and funny.

I think that Lucas and Riley are going to be adorable. Corey was amazing as Farkle. He was hilarious and so on point with his lines and scenes. You can tell that Farkle is Minkus son! I especially love his scenes with Maya.  Now to start on Ben and Danielle. I don’t even know where to begin! It was like going back 10 years! It was awesome seeing Cory and Topanga on the screen again this time as parents. They were cute and funny just like 10 years ago. Nothing has changed. I LOVE seeing Cory as a dad! Its awesome seeing him guide his daughter through the world and teach her what is right just like Mr. Feeny did with him 10 years ago.  Although we didn’t get to see much of Danielle in this episode from what little we did see I LOVE seeing Topanga as a mom! I knew she’d be playing mediator when Cory and Riley were batting heads. Over all I think this show is going to be amazing. It is definitely different than the other Disney shows out there. There are so many Boy Meets World feels in it as well. Oh and I LOVED that we got to see Mr. Feeny at the end! What great way to end the episode. I just loved it. It’s going to be an amazing show and big hit for Disney.
